US Navy Torpedoman, Third Class Curtis Virgle Mathis posing on the grounds of a naval base. Mathis is wearing his dress blue uniform and white cotton "Dixie Cup" hat. His designation as a torpedoman is prominently displayed on his right sleeve. Mathis stands in frontof a large bush encircled by white-painted rocks. A 1940s era automobile is parked in front of an administrative building in the background. Naval officers in khaki uniforms are visible behind Mathis and in the right background. Mathis died on june 12, 1943 when his submarine, USS R-12, sank during a training exercise off Key West, Florida. Masthis was the son of M.C. and Ruth Viola Mathis (2019.054.0008) and the brother of Willie Dee Mathis (2019.054.0005). |
